| Well, I can answer for the parts of HR1 the Obama jobs stimulus bill that affects my area and myself, of course. I read through all of the bill searching for things that would affect my state, Washington. Our unemployment figures are nearing 10% and probably much higher due to the many people that are working part time after using up their unemployment benefits. Very soon there will be hundreds of jobs available for out of work ship repair people to work on a couple of Coast Guard ships. One project is $29 Million bucks to get one of our Icebreakers back in service after it had been left dockside for a couple years due to lack of funds. I, myself will be working on that or the other Coast Guard project for maintaining the fleet over the course of the next 5 years. The Coast Guard needs these ships to fulfill their increasing missions around the world and new needs in the North Sea Passage due to climate change. Navy Admirals have been clamoring for more Icebreaker availability. We will be happy to do the work on them at decent wages. In addition there is a lot of money for jobs increasing the security of our largest ports for the non-maritime construction field. We have a lot of highly trained people that are out of work in this area since we have had a lot of Homeland Security trained people working on our fleets of Wa State ferries and tug boats that ply the waters here. That work is more or less completed. So there are people in place that are out of work. Another way that the stimulus bill will help our area is that it has money for on-the-job training programs. A lot of the people that are ready to do some of the highly skilled labor are starting to retire and there aren't enough trained young people ready to take their place. I am an electrician and an electronics tech and can attest to the upcoming shortage. The stimulus package will provide matching funds for employers for hiring and training needed new employees. This will help our economy as a whole a few years from now. Employers don't like to have too many new employees because it cuts into their bottom line since it slows down experienced people. So that will encourage them to train replacement workers now when they need them. The "boomers" are retiring as I type. Merely graduating from electrical or electronic school does not teach even half of the work. In addition, there is money for renewable energy projects and to work on our electrical grid. I don't know that much about those jobs because I don't work in that area but I do know we have a tremendous amount of available clean energy from geo-thermal here due to our local volcanoes. At least one project is underway for a moderate sized plant. Also extended unemployment checks will ease the transition until we get going again and will probably save many middle-class homes. Our state has a well educated populace that will do OK probably by 2011. Those laid off by Microsoft and some other tech companies will probably have to move but a good amount of them came from elsewhere anyway. They can afford to or should be able to so I don't care much about them. Anyhow, those are a few of the things that I know personally about. Oh yeah, I will also be able to afford to extend my healthcare until work gets going again. |
