| Is my teenage son 'wierd'? Do we try and change him? Now, im not calling me or my family abnormal, or wierd... But we have interests which other people may not, Me and my wife brought up our only Guy in a typically a strict Christian lifestyle, we were surrounded by people the same as us... We are settled in fine, but our son isnt 'like' other boys, while most of the teenage boys around here spend their time swearing, drinking and getting up to god knows what, my son is much happier walking around an art gallery, or discussing books etc. So for my sons birthday he requested a certain Fruit bowl, i know this isnt the typical gift request from a teenage boy, but my son is into these sorts of things... Anyway, after a few months of moving in, our friendship with our neighbours increased. Nearer the time to my sons birthday, when i'd purchased the fruit bowl, I asked my neighbour if she'd mind hiding the fruit bowl in her attic until my sons birthday, I knew the chances of him breaking into my neighbours house and going into her attic looking for something are slim, but We're such worriers i felt i had no choice to request it was hidden from him... My neighbour also has a son the same age as our son, our sons are very different people, he'd much rather be out drinking and causing vandalism, compard to our son who'd rather be painting or listening to mozart. My neighbours son soon found the fruit bowl and asked his parents about it, they told him the truth, and now my son is being terribly picked on for asking for a fruit bowl for his birthday, all the local lads are laughing and making up nicknames for him, and hes worried to go out. Should me and my wife try to change my son, as we do know its not normal for a teenage boy, do we encourage him to get out there, have fun, and live a happy teenage life, or do we let him carry on being picked on for his deep interestes with violins, art, books and shakespeare? | Your son sounds like an incredible guy! I'm almost seventeen, and if I was given the choice between an artistic, well-read, talented guy and a drunk vandal I know who I'd rather be friends with. Your son sounds great, and you should be encouraging him to keep up these interesting hobbies rather than making him swap them for dull and destructive ones. At least, that's what I think. As for the bullying, well... they're only bullies. They aren't as strong as your son if he dares to be different while they have to be like everyone else to feel secure. And because they're weaker than he is, he can stop them. The problem won't go away if he hides in the house or ignores them, so you're left with two options. Confront the boys (bad idea if he's scared and has a non-confrontational personality) or you confront the parents. You said you were good friends, and THEY didn't seem to have a problem with your son. Get them to tell their guy to stop. Or, if he has any big older male cousins or friends, they could go and confront the bullies together. Bullies are cowards and will back down in the face of an unknown quantity. If they think he has protection from an older man they won't try anything with him. It's probably a bad idea to try and make him someone he's not. If he's not as, ahem, social as these other boys then it's probably something he'll just grow into. I hated spending time with girls my own age for years, as I felt like we had nothing in common, but my social skills have improved and I've made friends with them despite that. I was just a late bloomer. Chances are he is too. Note: Don't try and get him to befriend those neighbourhood boys. They don't sound nice and they won't forget that they've bullied him. | This young man displays the increasingly popular "fauxhawk." (pronounced "foe-hawk") While not a shocking as it's predecessor the mohawk, it is created in basically the same way. The hair is separated into three even sections at the front. The center is left long while the sides are cut shorter (shaved off completely for a mohawk while it is simply half the length or less for a fauxhawk). After the hair has been cut, a styling product is added liberally. Knox Gelatin (unsweetened) provides a strong flexible hold, but hair mousse will also work. Next the hair is blow dried to set. While blow drying, the hair must swept back at the root and then flipped forward at the end. The best way to accomplish this is to focus the airflow on the roots first while you are standing normally, then near the end, bend forward so that you hair hangs straight "up" and blow-dry the ends of your hair in this position. Styling time depends on length of hair. For the guy in the picture, I would guess it took about 20 minutes to accomplish. |
